Eastside Pride students will soon be starting an American Revolution project. To support their research I located some websites on the American Revolution. I am using a tech tool I learned about called a mash page. I will be using Middlespot to create the American Revolution mash page. See below.

I missed seeing you all at the Big Read this weekend. I received many free books, pens and other items. I met three outstanding authors and speakers. Jody Feldmen the author of The Gollywhopper Games was there speaking about her book. She is from St. Louis and attended the University of Missouri as a journalism major, although this was not her original major. She started out in the advertising field. After she started a family she decided to get out of the advertising field and work in the school library! Yea! There she met a boy who was a relectant reader but fell in love with the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He wanted another book that was similar. As the boy’s teacher and librarian scurried around to found Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, she sat and thought that she could write a book this boy would like, and so began the manuscript for The Gollywhopper Games. She was a delight to meet and listen too. For more information on Jody Feldman and her books visit her website at http://www.jodyfeldman.com/flash.html
Next, I met Cynthia Lord the author of Rules. Cynthia lives in a small rural town in Maine and has an autistic son and a daughter (not autistic). Her inspiration for Rules obviously came from her own family. Her son, just like David in Rules likes to drop toys in the fish bowl. She said they were always “people” toys, like Barbie, GI Joe, or a Power Ranger. She wrote the book through the perspective of her daughter. Cynthia passed around her Newbery Honor Award Plaque and copies of Rules written in Korean, Japanese, Italian, and Braille. I really enjoy listening to her. For more on Mrs. Lord visit her website at http://www.cynthialord.com/
Finally, I met Heather Brewer, also a St. Louis resident, from the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod Series. What fun! She had black and purple hair, a great smile and casual way. She loves that you all are reading her books and have some great things in store for Vlad in Eleventh and Twelfth Grade. Hey, if you were there you could have won a copy of Eleventh Grade Burns! One lucky girl in St. Louis is walking around with Eleventh Grade Burns and she has been sworn to secrecy to not let the ending out! If you ever get a chance to meet Mrs. Brewer do it, you won’t be disappointed. Vist Heather Brewer’s website at http://www.heatherbrewer.com/ or visit her blog and ask her questions at http://heatherbrewer.com/blog/. She promises to respond to your comments or questions if you post to her blog. If you’ve gotten this far in my blog post, come to the library and tell me “I’d like to be a member of the Minion Horde” and you will get a prize.
All three authors said persistence, time writing and rewriting are the key to getting published. They also said anything is possible and if you aspire to become a writer…. write! and write! and write!
I’d love to read any of your writing if you would like to share.
Have a great week! Mrs. Burger
